Learning to write is not an easy undertaking. If you observe that your child has problems and makes a lot of  spelling  mistakes, you’ve come to the right place. Because we explain different ways to help him and to simplify the learning process.

Word games, dictation, or regular reading are simple exercises that can help improve spelling. Read on because we have some tips for you to help your child out. But don’t forget: you need a lot of patience to reach your goal. And of course your child has to work on it, be patient and make an effort.

What can you do to avoid spelling mistakes?

1. Develop phonological awareness

The first piece of advice we suggest to prevent  spelling  mistakes is to promote phonological awareness. This is fundamental to learning correct spelling  because children need to know how to pronounce words correctly before they can spell them.

This means that the child must be able to recognize and differentiate between the individual sounds of the word in order to then understand them as a whole. However, if there is a phonological weakness, this ability needs to be strengthened.

2. Word games

Now is the time to play and learn. Word games are fun, which makes them especially useful for learning to spell. At the same time, the child can get to know many new words.

Family game

There are many different options, but  classic games like Scrabble or Scattergories are always popular and entertaining. Children can learn a lot and still have fun. They love to play which makes the learning process easier.

3. Short dictations

It is also advisable to dictate short texts to the child so that they can practice spelling. You can make up your own sentences or dictate a book that interests your child.

If you correct the dictation, your child needs to see the mistakes and it is best to explain the appropriate spelling rules to them so that they can make progress.

At the same time, it is important that  the child has sufficient reading available, both at home and at school.

4. Frequent reading

Reading is without a doubt the best practice for improving your spelling. Use interesting books to motivate you to read for at least half an hour a day. It can learn new vocabulary and the right combination of sentences because the brain processes all of this automatically.

If you want to stimulate your child’s interest , choosing the right readings  is important. In addition, of course, your little darling needs time and a comfortable place to read. It is best if you are a good role model for him here too and you reserve a certain amount of time every day for interesting books.

5. Make a drawing

Take advantage of mnemonics by drawing a picture from the word that your child can remember. So it can learn the spelling easily, because it will always associate a certain word with a funny picture.

As you can see, there are many ways to prevent spelling mistakes. But patience and a lot of practice are necessary to achieve the goal. However, you shouldn’t overwhelm your child or take away their motivation.

If your child still can’t improve their spelling, they may  have dyslexia. You should have it examined if you suspect it, because a spelling problem can be treated.
