Blisters in children: how to treat them

In the event of various accidents at home or on vacation, it is important to know how we can best take care of injuries to children. Blisters  are very common, so today we have several tips on how to treat them.

How do bubbles form?

A bladder is a fluid-filled cavity under the epidermis. This can be caused by a burn, friction, allergy or vaccination. This skin lesion can be very small and harmless, but it can also be several centimeters.

Blisters are not dangerous, but they are uncomfortable,  especially on the hands or feet. The liquid that collects in it protects the skin and supplies it with moisture.

The main problem with bubbles is when they burst. Then inflammation can develop.

Why do bubbles appear? The reasons vary widely, but the most common are: new shoes that pinch or rub, or a burn (from hot water, exposure to the sun, iron, etc.).

Sometimes blisters can also develop in children as a result of eczema, for example when children touch poisonous plants (such as ivy or sumac).

But diseases can also result in blisters. For example epidermolysis bullosa, herpes, chickenpox, impetigo or other skin infections.

What can be done about blisters in children?

It’s not just important to find out what caused the blister to develop. It also needs to be handled carefully to avoid bursting  or pain.

A good way to protect them is with a gauze bandage or an adhesive bandage. This way it cannot be infected with dangerous germs. This is not always easy with children as the patch often comes off or they remove it themselves.

In no case should you puncture the blister, as this will cause the liquid to leak out and not protect the new skin that forms underneath.

If the blister is very large, or if the fluid in it is cloudy or purulent, you should see your child to see a doctor for treatment.

Often the bladder is opened with a scalpel and an antibiotic or scarring cream is applied. Fortunately, that doesn’t hurt. Then the area must be bandaged so that no dirt can get in and infection can be prevented.

How can blisters in children be prevented?

To prevent blistering in children, we need to be very careful and do our utmost to avoid accidents at home.

Do not leave the iron switched on unattended, be careful when cooking and with hot water and protect your child from the sun.

The little ones are very curious and often have no sense of danger ; because of this, they touch all sorts of objects they see without knowing that they are hot and that they can injure themselves in the process.

When the child has new shoes, they can put on light socks to keep the shoes from rubbing or pinching. You can also put a plaster on the vulnerable area as a preventive measure.

A high sun protection factor (at least 50) is important on vacation or in the swimming pool . You should apply this every two hours, even on cloudy days or when your child does not go into the water. Even in the mountains or when you are out in the fresh air with your child for a long time, you have to take precautions.

Even so, you can’t always prevent blisters. But if one does arise, you now know what to do.
